The Squatters Favourite!

For several decades during the 19th Century, Farmers (Squatters) from the Western District of Victoria
shared in a period of great prosperity. This meant, that when they came to purchase an Alcock Billiard Table for their splendid Billiard rooms they were quite able to select a very special model. So many chose a particular Table model that it became known as “the Squatters Favourite”.

NOTE: The table pictured is a Squatter’s Favourite Billiard Table, but it is not Table No 2738

The outstanding feature of the Squatters Favourite Table was the presence of vivid grains in the figured Blackwood (fiddleback) timbers and veneers. In some examples this figuring was extraordinary – greatly admired then; and, due to its scarcity, even more so today.

Squatters Favourite Table No 2738 is just such a case.Originally made at the Alcock manufactory, (132 Russell Street, in what is now the CBD of Melbourne), the Table features remarkably fine figuring in the various timbers.

Restoration of Table No 2738 to include:

• New Trufast moulded rubber cushions
• New Strachan West of England billiard cloth
• New pocket nets and leathers
• Table erected at factory, surface of framework planed level to spirit level and straight edge
• Slate bed fitted, tested , fitted with new timber linings and machine ground and hand finished
• Show woodwork washed down and re-polished as required
