During the early 1890s there was a world -wide economic slowdown. In the Colony of Victoria this took the form of a severe Depression. Large fortunes were lost; a number of banks closed their doors and unemployment reached 30 per cent. Many companies went bankrupt. Alcocks survived by concentrating on Billiard Table repairs and service.

Recovery started to emerge in the later years of the decade, and Alcocks introduced several new Table Designs – precursors of more spectacular Table designs developed in the earliest years of the 20th Century.

Table No 3841 was one of these new designs. At the time it was simply given the designation “Table No 8”. The Show woodwork was made from Tasmanian Blackwood or a combination of Blackwood and Australian Cedar, and it featured a distinctive slightly tapered leg with eight concave facets.

Restoration of Table No 3841 to include:

• New Trufast moulded rubber cushions
• Full check on the slate bed including machine grinding and hand finishing.
• Re-polishing of the Black Wood show timbers to good antique status.
• New 6811 30 oz West of England Billiard cloth by Strachan & Co.
